DNS Lookup: Check A, CNAME, MX, NS & TXT Records of Any Domain

Type a domain to see the DNS records it publishes: where the website points, which servers receive its email, and which name servers control it.

Quick checks:

What each DNS record does

DNS is the phone book of the internet. A domain holds several kinds of record, and each answers a different question about the domain.

A recordPoints a name to an IPv4 address

The A record is what makes a website open. It maps a hostname such as example.com to the IPv4 address of the server that hosts it. A name can have several A records, which spreads visitors across servers.

93.184.216.34

AAAA recordPoints a name to an IPv6 address

The AAAA record does the same job as A for IPv6. If both exist, visitors on an IPv6 network are sent to the AAAA address and everyone else to the A address.

CNAME recordMakes one name an alias of another

A CNAME says that www.example.com is just another name for a different hostname. It is common for www, CDN and SaaS hostnames. A name with a CNAME cannot hold other records, which is why the bare domain normally uses A records instead.

shops.example.net

MX recordSays which servers receive email

MX records list the mail servers for a domain, each with a priority number. Lower numbers are tried first. Without a working MX record, email sent to the domain has nowhere to go.

NS recordNames the servers that hold the zone

NS records show which name servers are in charge of the domain's DNS. They are set at your registrar. When you change hosting or DNS provider, this is the record you update.

ns1.example.com

TXT recordCarries text for verification and policy

TXT records hold plain text. They are used to prove domain ownership to Google and Microsoft, to publish SPF and DKIM email policies, and for DMARC on the _dmarc subdomain.

v=spf1 include:_spf.example.com ~all

SOA recordDescribes the zone and its timers

The Start of Authority record names the primary name server and the responsible mailbox, and holds the zone's serial number and refresh, retry and expiry timers.

ns1.example.com hostmaster.example.com 2026100501

CAA recordLimits who may issue SSL certificates

A CAA record tells certificate authorities which of them are allowed to issue an SSL certificate for the domain. If none is set, any authority may.

0 issue "letsencrypt.org"

SRV recordLocates a service by name and port

SRV records tell software where to find a service, using a priority, weight, port and target host. They are used by chat, voice and some email and calendar clients.

PTR recordMaps an IP address back to a name

A PTR record is the reverse of an A record. Mail servers often check it, so a mail server's IP address should point back to a matching hostname.

DNS lookup questions

Short answers about checking DNS records.

What is a DNS lookup?

A DNS lookup asks the Domain Name System what is published for a domain name. The answer is a set of records that say where the website is hosted, which servers receive its email, which name servers control the zone and which verification or policy text it carries.

Which DNS records can I check with this tool?

You can check A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, SOA and CAA records for a domain or subdomain, SRV records for services, and PTR records for reverse lookups of an IP address. Choose All common records to see the first eight at once.

How do I check whether my DNS changes have propagated?

Pick Compare all three in the resolver menu. We ask this server, Google Public DNS and Cloudflare DNS at the same time and show whether they agree. If they differ, the change is still spreading, usually until the old record's TTL has passed.

How do I check an SPF or DMARC record?

SPF is a TXT record on the domain itself that starts with v=spf1. DMARC is a TXT record on the _dmarc subdomain, for example _dmarc.yourdomain.com. Use the SPF and DMARC buttons under the search box and the tool fills it in for you.

Why does my domain show no records?

Either the domain is not registered, its name servers have no zone for it, or the record type simply is not set. Check the NS records first: they show which name servers should hold your DNS zone.

Is this DNS lookup free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit on how many domains you check, apart from a short pause of about a second between lookups.
